Panama Canal Expansion Keeping April 2016 Opening Target?
The expansion of the Panama Canal is currently scheduled for April of 2016, allowing ships with a capacity of up to 14,000 TEUs (the equivalent of 7,000 x 40′ containers) to pass through the century-old passage between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Until now, only ships of up 1/3 of that capacity can pass through the Canal. Whether the contractor can hold the April deadline, however, will not be known until December, according to an article in the Journal of Commerce.
