Duties, Taxes & Fees
Taxes & FeesIn addition to the costs associated with shipment, you’ll need to prepare for other costs, such as those levied by the Egyptian government. Some of these fees could include:
Egypt Import and Registration Fees
Customs duty (varies by vehicle value, age, and engine size)
Value-added tax (VAT)
Development or luxury tax (depending on engine size)
Optional marine insurance/shipping protection
Wharf, inland transportation, storage, and delivery charges after arrival
Inspection fees for customs clearance and registration
Undercarriage cleaning costs
Vehicle compliance or modification costs (if non-conforming)
Vehicle registration and motor insurance fees

Your agent can help you navigate these questions. Customs duties on vehicles vary greatly and are calculated based on the value, age, and engine size of the car — you can generally expect to pay between 30% and 100% of the vehicle’s value (lower engine-capacity vehicles fall toward the bottom of that range and higher engine-capacity vehicles toward the top). On top of customs duty, a 14% VAT applies, along with additional development or luxury taxes depending on engine size. Both customs duties and taxes are payable on all imported vehicles, with limited exceptions. Electrically operated vehicles are exempt from import tariffs. For the latest figures, your agent can confirm the current rates that apply to your specific vehicle.
Egypt Import Duty and Tax Exemptions
Duties & ExemptionsMost vehicle importers should expect to pay customs duty, 14% VAT, and additional vehicle-related taxes or fees when importing a car into Egypt. The final amount can vary significantly depending on the vehicle’s customs value, engine size, fuel type, country of origin, and import eligibility. Certain vehicles or importers may qualify for reduced or exempt treatment, such as qualifying electric vehicles, vehicles imported under specific trade agreements, or approved expatriate, diplomatic, or temporary-import programs. Because Egypt’s vehicle import rules can be complex, your customs broker should confirm the exact duty, VAT, and other applicable fees before shipment.
Exemption Type | How to Qualify & Exemption Details |
|---|---|
Cars of Egyptians Abroad Initiative | Under Egypt’s initiative to facilitate the import of cars for Egyptians living abroad (the “zero-customs car import” scheme), an eligible Egyptian expatriate may import one vehicle for their own personal use without paying customs duties or taxes. To qualify, the expat must deposit an equivalent amount in foreign currency (for example, USD) into an Egyptian bank for a fixed period of five years; after this period, the deposit can be recovered in Egyptian pounds at the prevailing exchange rate. This program is administered through a dedicated electronic application and is frequently revised — eligibility, deadlines, and deposit conditions should be confirmed against the latest official guidance before shipping. |
Diplomatic Exemption | Certain diplomatic personnel may be eligible to import their vehicle duty-free, subject to the applicable diplomatic provisions. |
Temporary Import for Tourists | Tourists bringing their vehicle into Egypt on a temporary basis may be eligible for a temporary import permit, which means they would be exempt from paying customs duties and taxes. Proper documentation must be maintained, and the vehicle must be re-exported within the permitted period to recover any guarantees. |
Shipping Methods
Choose your shipping methodYour vehicle can be shipped via container, via air freight, or on a roll-on/roll-off ship (think of it like a parking lot on a shipping vessel).
The method you choose will impact the cost and timing of your shipment. A quick summary of the benefits of each:
- Cheapest → Ro-Ro
- Balanced → Shared Container Load
- Maximum protection → Full Container Load
- Fastest → Air Freight

Ro-Ro (Roll-On/Roll-Off) Shipping
Ro-Ro shipping is typically the most affordable option, with the additional benefit that these ships have more frequent departures, meaning your shipment will have a shorter lead time before arrival.
Ro-Ro’s main drawback is that your vehicle will be in the open on the Ro-Ro deck with hundreds of other vehicles, and you will not be able to transport personal items inside the vehicle.

Shared Container Load (SCL)
With shared container load, we’ll use our R-Rak method to safely load your vehicle into a container, along with a few other customers’ vehicles. This allows you to share the cost of a container while benefiting from added security compared to Ro-Ro shipping.
However, it’s generally more expensive than Ro-Ro and takes longer as the container won’t ship until it’s been filled.

Full Container Load (FCL)
Full container load offers the benefits of shared container load shipping; however, the container is reserved exclusively for your vehicle or vehicles. This offers the highest level of protection and security, allows you to ship your vehicle with personal goods inside, and departs as soon as it can be loaded onto a vessel – no waiting to fill the container. The primary drawback is that FCL is more expensive than SCL and Ro-Ro.

Air Freight
Air freight is the fastest method. It’s exactly what it sounds like – we load your vehicle into a plane and then it is transported by air to its destination in Egypt.
While significantly more expensive than other options, it’s ideal for time-sensitive shipments, reducing the process to days rather than weeks or months.
Import Eligibility & Documentation Required
ComplianceTo ship a car to Egypt, you’ll need to confirm a few details. Your agent can assist you in the process of determining your vehicle’s eligibility for shipment to Egypt. Egypt applies strict import rules, so eligibility should be confirmed before you ship.
- Egypt operates strict import age limits. As a general rule, used vehicles are not permitted for private import — vehicles must be new or no more than one year old (current or previous model year). When importing a new car, it must be imported within the same year it was manufactured; for a used vehicle, you must be able to prove that you are the first owner.
- Individuals are generally limited to one imported vehicle every five years, and you should have owned the vehicle for at least six months.
- Your vehicle must comply with Egyptian legal and technical requirements, including safety, emissions, technical, and environmental standards.
- If your vehicle does not conform to safety or emissions standards, it may need to undergo a compliance or modification process, which will be an additional expense.
- Importing vintage or classic cars may carry eligibility requirements that differ from those for new cars — confirm the rules for your specific vehicle before shipping.
- Special programs, such as the initiative for returning Egyptian expatriates, may allow slightly different conditions; eligibility should be verified against the latest official guidance.
You’ll also want to ensure you have all proper documentation for import. You’ll need the following documentation to ship a car to Egypt:
Documents for Shipping
Bill of Sale or Purchase Invoice
showing ownership, date, and vehicle value
US Title or Registration Certificate
confirming ownership transfer
Vehicle Photos
(VIN plate/chassis number, exterior, interior, engine bay) if required by the carrier or Egypt authorities
Shipping Contract/Booking Confirmation and Marine Insurance Certificate
Marine insurance recommended but not required
US Export Clearance Documents
and proof of vehicle condition
Upon arrival in Egypt, you’ll need the following to complete your import and register your vehicle:
Documents for Import
Original Shipping Bill of Lading, Airway Bill, or Seaway Bill
Egyptian or International Driver's License
Technical Inspection Documentation
Proof of Egyptian insurance
Passport for identification purposes
Proof of Official Address Registration
Egypt Customs 'Form C'
Certificate of Conformity
Vehicle Registration in Egypt (Traffic Department)
RegistrationAll vehicles shipped to Egypt must be registered before they can be legally driven on public roads. As part of this process, the vehicle must undergo a technical inspection to ensure it meets Egyptian safety and emissions standards. This inspection takes place once your vehicle has cleared customs and is carried out at a designated inspection center.
If your vehicle requires any modifications or compliance work to meet Egyptian requirements, these will need to be handled before registration. Our agent can assist you with finding an appropriate specialist mechanic.
Once your vehicle has passed inspection, you will receive a Vehicle Inspection Certificate, after which you can obtain a vehicle license from the Egyptian Traffic Department by submitting the required documents and paying the relevant registration fees. Registration fees vary depending on the vehicle specifications but are generally around $300. The documents required to register your imported vehicle in Egypt include a valid driver’s license, proof of ownership, a national ID or passport, the Vehicle Inspection Certificate, customs clearance documents, and an insurance certificate. Imported private vehicles are typically issued light blue license plates.
If all of this sounds like a lot to process, don’t worry! With agents in Egypt, the US, and abroad, the team at CFR Classic can assist with inspections, compliance requirements, and the full registration process.

Egypt Car Shipping FAQ
Common QuestionsEverything commonly asked about shipping a car from the US to Egypt.
Should I use escrow or a secure payment service when buying a car overseas?
Using a secure payment service is highly recommended. Services like CFR SafePay act as a trusted intermediary—verifying the seller, confirming the vehicle details, and holding funds until everything checks out—helping protect you from fraud.
Are there special considerations for shipping electric vehicles?
Yes. Electric vehicles are classified as hazardous cargo due to their batteries, which means:
- Additional documentation is required
- Shipping costs may be higher
- Some carriers have restrictions or require special containers
- Working with an experienced shipper is essential for EV transport.
Can I ship a new car overseas?
Yes, but you’ll need proper ownership documents, such as:
- Vehicle title or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MSO)
- Notarized bill of sale
- Proof of full payment
- In many cases, it’s easier to ship once the official title is issued.
Is air freight available for car shipping?
Yes. Air freight is the fastest option, delivering vehicles in days instead of weeks. However, it is significantly more expensive than ocean shipping and is typically used for high-value or time-sensitive vehicles.
Do departure and arrival ports affect shipping cost?
Yes. Popular shipping routes (like major U.S. to Germany ports) are usually more affordable due to higher volume and efficiency. Less common routes can cost more due to limited availability.
Is it cheaper to import a car or buy one locally in Germany?
It depends. Importing can make sense for:
Classic or specialty vehicles
Personal vehicles during relocation (often tax-exempt)
However, for standard vehicles, taxes, duties, and modification costs can make local purchasing more economical.
Do I need marine insurance?
Yes, it’s strongly recommended. Carrier liability is limited (often around $500), which may not cover your vehicle’s value. Marine insurance typically costs about 1–2% of the car’s value and provides full protection during transit.
Can I import a used car into Egypt?
Generally, no. Egypt strongly restricts the private import of used vehicles — as a rule, only new vehicles (or, in some cases, those no more than one year old) may be imported. The main route for importing an older vehicle is the special initiative for returning Egyptian expatriates, which carries its own strict conditions and deadlines. Confirm your eligibility with your agent and against the latest official guidance before shipping.
How does the "Cars of Egyptians Abroad" initiative work?
Egypt’s initiative for Egyptians living abroad allows an eligible expatriate to import one vehicle for personal use without paying customs duties or taxes, provided they deposit an equivalent amount in foreign currency into an Egyptian bank for a fixed five-year period (recoverable afterward in Egyptian pounds). The scheme is run through a dedicated electronic application and is revised frequently, so eligibility, deadlines, and deposit terms should always be checked against the latest official information before you commit to shipping.
