Vehicle Import Options
As you engage in the process of car shipping to Greece, some of the most important questions to consider include:
- Do you plan to permanently keep your car in Greece or is this just a temporary move?
- Is your vehicle for personal use, or do you plan to resell it or use it for commercial purposes?
- Have you been the owner of the car for at least 6 months?
- Are you importing a new or used car?
These questions and more will determine whether your car is eligible for shipping to Greece. Your actual tax rate is also based on these details.
When shipping a car to Greece, you should never assume that your international shipping scenario is the same as someone else’s. Importing classic cars or used cars may have eligibility requirements that differ from those for newer vehicles for import into Greece.
Notably, Greece, as part of the European Union, follows the EU’s emission standards for vehicles. Imported vehicles must comply with the Euro 6 emission standard or later. If your car does not meet these standards, you may be unable to import it, you may face a penalty fee, or it might require modifications to comply. Additionally, the shipping of new vehicles is discouraged. Importing new cars to Greece usually will generally involve paying higher import taxes and registration fees compared to used cars.

Things to Consider
Shipping a Car to Greece: Costs & Time Frame
Using a baseline of a compact car being shipped using the roll-on/roll-off method from the Port of Los Angeles to the Port of Piraeus, our estimate for Car Shipping from USA to Greece starts at a cost of $995 USD.
The final cost to ship your car to Greece can be affected by various factors, including the vehicle type and model, your current location, the nearest departure port in the USA, your chosen shipping method, availability of your chosen services, your destination port, and your final destination.
Additionally, you’ll need to consider additional car shipping costs related to shipping a car, such as storage, cleaning, other vendor fees, and Greek taxes & duties, such as Greece’s import taxes and value-added tax. Don’t forget that if your vehicle is non-operational, it may incur higher car shipping rates.
Generally, shipping a car to Greece from the U.S West Coast will cost slightly more money than container shipping from the U.S East Coast.
An estimated timeframe for shipping a car to Greece measures the duration of a port-to-port service. Typically, the timeframe to ship a car to Greece from the USA will take between 4-6 weeks, depending on your port of departure, arrival, and method of service. This is provided all the required documents are submitted to us in a timely manner, the vehicle is prepared to depart and all other vehicles to fill the container have been secured.
Taxes & Duties for Greece Car Shipping
Prior to car shipping to Greece from the USA, verify your vehicle’s specifications and compliance with Greek requirements.
If you are shipping a car to Greece from the USA, your car will be subject to a 10% import duty as well as FPA (Fóros Prastithémenes Axías, the Greek equivalent of value-added tax or VAT) of 24% levied by the Greek government.
However, in certain circumstances, you might be able to gain an exemption from paying customs duties and taxes on a vehicle you import into Greece for personal use. This includes:
- Tourists are able to ship their cars over for use with non-Greek license plates on a temporary basis for a maximum of 6 months with no requirement to pay customs duty. Following this period, the car must either be exported out of Greece or registered with the Greek authorities.
- Under certain circumstances, individuals may ship their vehicle into Greece for longer than 6 months without having to pay import duties and taxes. These exemptions aim to reflect the unique requirement for personal transport of this subsection of individuals. This includes the following:
- Students enrolled in a higher education program based in Greece
- Individuals on a temporary, fixed-term employment contract with the Greek state
- Teaching staff employed on a temporary, fixed-term contract within a higher education institute
- Diplomatic and Consular staff and their employees
- Non-Greek citizens who obtain permanent residence in Greece may import a single vehicle duty-free as part of their personal belongings.
- EU citizens can have their car shipped to Greece without paying duty, provided that they have owned the vehicle for 6 months or longer.
- Returning Greek citizens who have lived away from Greece but are permanently moving back to Greece can bring their personal belongings, including their car, without having to pay the usual import taxes and customs duties.
The amount of taxes and import duties payable when shipping a car to Greece from the US will vary and depends upon the individual details of your shipment.

Shipping a Car to Greece: Options
Car Shipping from USA to Greece can be performed using a shared container, a sole container or a roll-on/roll-off service. It is important to find the best solution to meet your shipping needs.
Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) – Vehicles are loaded onto a ship that contains a cargo area built like a very big parking garage. International RoRo shipping tends to be cheaper as, other than the shipping charge, you are required to pay only port charges and customs clearance charges.
Transits tend to be faster than with the shared container service, as the vessels depart on a weekly basis.
Shared container service – This method for car shipping to Greece requires multiple vehicles to be loaded into one shipping container. While there are more fees involved to ship a car from the USA to Greece with shared container service than with the roll-on/roll-off shipping method, due to the fact that the container must be processed, these charges are shared between the various clients who are using the container. Such fees include a trucking charge, terminal handling charge, customs clearance, and charge for unloading the vehicles at a bonded warehouse.
One disadvantage is that you might face a longer wait before your vehicle departs, as the container must have a full load before shipping to Greece.
Full container load – You have the added benefit of a fully enclosed container, just like our shared container service, but the 20 ft container is dedicated solely to your vehicle. Since there’s no wait for other cars to be loaded, you’ll enjoy a shorter wait before departure. However, additional terminal handling fees and other charges won’t be shared with other vehicle owners.
Our most selective customers prefer the high level of safety and expediency offered when shipping cars with dedicated container shipping. When your vehicle is received, we’ll photograph and document the vehicle’s condition as well as the loading process. Your vehicle will be loaded using our modern steel loading system, which is not only environmentally friendly, but doesn’t rely on outdated wood ramps and nails that other shipping companies use, which can damage your vehicle.
After your car is loaded onto your own private container, it is locked and secured. This will ensure no one gains access to your car before reaching its final destination. Since the vehicle is fully enclosed in a secure container, we invite our clients to pack and transport other items inside the vehicle. However, everything must be loaded securely, as we won’t be responsible for loss or damage of any kind.
Once your vehicle reaches its destination in Greece, our agent will unlock the container, document the vehicle’s condition, and photograph the entire unloading process. Every step of the shipping process is not only handled carefully but documented for your peace of mind.
Compared to our roll-on/roll-off shipping option, enclosed container shipping is not only more secure when shipping to Greece, but much faster due to frequent departures each week.

Destination Ports – Greece
Here are the entry ports in Greece that we can ship a car to.
Cleaning Your Vehicle’s Undercarriage
Before shipping to Greece, the undercarriage of your car must be cleaned and free of foreign soil to prevent the introduction of invasive plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms. This can be accomplished through steam cleaning or other thorough cleaning methods.
CFR Classic can assist with finding an appropriate cleaner to help ensure you comply with this requirement before car shipping to Greece. We do not recommend washing the interior of the vehicle as it can cause mold during transport. Vacuuming the interior is usually more than sufficient prior to car transport.
Plating Your Vehicle in Greece
All cars shipped to Greece from the U.S. must be registered. Once your car has been cleared through customs and you have paid all of the relevant import duties and taxes, you will receive a Customs Clearance Certificate from Greek Customs. Your vehicle will then need to undergo an inspection by the Technical Inspection Service (KTEO). This will ensure that your vehicle complies with all of the relevant Greek safety and environmental regulations. On passing this inspection, you will receive a valid inspection certificate.
Once you have this inspection certificate, you will need to register your vehicle at the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Before registering your vehicle, you must ensure that you have a suitable Greek insurance policy in place that meets all local requirements.
In order to register your car with the Greek authorities, you will need to gather together all of the necessary documentation, including:
- Ownership certificate/Original title
- If the car shipping applicant is the car owner, as shown in the foreign registration certificate, a declaration of ownership with an authenticated signature should be presented.
- If the applicant is not stated as the car owner in the foreign registration certificate, then a certified sales declaration should be provided.
- Vehicle Registration document
- Passport, driver’s license and/or Residence Permit to prove your identity and residency status in Greece. (this must include a Greek translation if written in a foreign language) – this document must be certified as being an accurate translation of the original document by an official translator, competent diplomatic or consular representative.
- Customs Declaration/Clearance Statement
- Proof of payment of Greek taxes and duties
- Technical Inspection (KTEO) Report
- Proof of valid Greek insurance
- Certificate of conformity (COC), if available
- Application form for vehicle registration
In order to register your vehicle in Greece, you will need to pay the necessary registration fee. The total cost of this will depend upon the initial purchase price of your vehicle, as well as its age, model, and mileage. Notably, older vehicles will be subject to a higher registration tax due to increased CO2 emissions. Meanwhile, electric or hybrid vehicles are often eligible for exemption or a reduction in registration fees in Greece.
After presenting this information and paying the relevant taxes, duties, and registration fee, your vehicle can be taken to the local Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport office to be registered and issued Greek license plates.
More information about the registration process can be found here on the Greek government’s vehicle registration page.
